BIOGRAPHY

VISUAL ARTIST| ART DIRECTOR | CURATOR | PHILANTHROPIST

Olwethu De Vos (b. 1992) is a visionary multidisciplinary visual artist, art director, and philanthropist based in Johannesburg, South Africa. With over a decade of experience directing high-impact arts organizations and complex projects, she brings a unique, 360-degree perspective to the industry that bridges the gap between creative production and executive management. As a practicing artist and the founder of her own fine art studios, her firsthand experience in production deeply informs her curatorial and directorial approach.

De Vos’s academic foundation was established at the Tshwane University of Technology, where she specialized in glassblowing, sculpture, and figure drawing. This technical expertise has translated into a robust studio practice and a series of notable solo exhibitions, including Matured: Alive Art (2025), When There Are No Words at Mmarthouse (2021), and Sta-Soft at FNB Art Joburg (2020). Her work has gained international recognition through features at prestigious platforms such as the Miami Prizm Art Fair, the Investec Cape Town Art Fair, and the Turbine Art Fair. Furthermore, she has been recognized as a top 15 finalist in the Thami Mnyele National Fine Arts Awards and completed the Schütz Fine Art Museum Residency in Austria in 2023.

Parallel to her personal practice, De Vos has cultivated an extensive career in curation and arts administration, leading the full lifecycle of over 30 exhibitions. She has collaborated with esteemed institutions such as the Pretoria Art Museum, August House, Everard Read Gallery and the Goethe-Institut. Her leadership was highlighted early in her career when she received the RMB (Rand Merchant Bank) x Teresa Lizamore Curatorial Residency in 2017. Beyond traditional curation, she is a specialist in collections management, professional archiving, and public engagement, having facilitated digital media platforms like the August House podcast.

As a dedicated philanthropist and mentor, De Vos is committed to the professional development of emerging South African talent. As the Co-Founder and Art Director of the Blessing Ngobeni Art Prize Foundation, she provides executive leadership for large-scale initiatives and conducts workshops on the "business of art," focusing on professional practice and portfolio development. Through this blend of creative excellence and strategic advocacy, De Vos continues to foster a sustainable and vibrant ecosystem for contemporary art while preserving South African heritage through meticulous leadership.
