MATURED
Matured is a drawing-led project that explores the evolving bodies of women over the age of 30. It reflects women in various stages of life. Some mothers, some tired, some tall, others living with disabilities. The project honours the natural changes that bodies undergo over time: gestures, skin, weight, stillness, and movement. It invites us instead to listen deeply and reflect on the experience of aging beyond superficial perceptions.
Central to the work is a collection of phrases drawn directly from real conversations words and expressions often used to describe aging women’s bodies. Phrases like “past her prime,” “sagging,” “used goods,” and “still pretty for her age” reveal society’s harsh and limiting views about aging. Matured does not attempt to rebrand aging as simply beautiful or empowered. Rather, it accepts aging as an inevitable, natural, and ongoing process. A fundamental part of life and human evolution. The project confronts cultural discomfort with aging bodies, especially women’s, and resists the pressures to freeze, erase, or deny this process.
In today’s society, many young women grow up fearing aging, internalizing messages that change equals loss, and that maturity leads to invisibility. Matured speaks back to this fear by offering no illusions or corrections. It does not seek to “fix” aging or cover it with positivity slogans. Instead, it embraces the truth of aging, highlighting the dignity and reality of evolving bodies.
The exhibition does not ask simply to be seen. It asks to be witnessed. Quiet and deliberate, it unfolds slowly over time, drawing by drawing, word by word, voice by voice. Building a space that allows women to be recognized as they truly are: continuing, changing, living. Matured is a thoughtful response to the narratives surrounding women’s bodies and aging. It creates a space for honest reflection, vulnerability, and a reimagining of what it means to grow older without shame or denial.
